Get found in Google searches – find out how to!
Your website essentially acts as your business’ online shop front, telling prospective customers about you, what you do, and how you can help them. And when it comes to people finding your website in search engines like Google, having a top Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) strategy is key.
Essentially, the main idea of SEO is to help your website move up the rankings and get closer to the holy grail of appearing on page 1 of search results, or as close to page 1 as possible. But how can you get found in Google search, and what is the best plan of action for your business?
In our latest blog post, we look at five things which will help to make sure your website stands out and gets the traffic that you deserve – read on to find out more.
Get your website indexed
Google regularly scrawls the internet to collect information about different websites, and sometimes your website can get found without you doing anything at all, and sometimes it won’t.
To speed up this process (known as indexing), you can submit your website to Google yourself. In addition to this, you can also resubmit every time you make a change to your website too, which tells Google that your website is updated regularly and helps Google to ensure that the correct version is always indexed as well.
Update your website regularly
Ensuring your website is updated regularly with new content is so important from an SEO point of view. To get started, a great idea is to look at putting a content marketing plan in place for your website, covering areas such as blog posts about topics that are of interest to your audience, news stories about your business, and updating your website with new content about your products, services and staff members.
By keeping your website updated regularly, you’re telling Google that your website is current, live, and can also be considered as a trusted source of information too.
Use the correct keywords
Google will rank your website for certain keywords that you use on your website.
These keywords will not only help to define the topic/subject of your website, but help your audience to find you online.
To work out which keywords you need to focus on, Google has a great keyword planner tool to help you find which keywords are most relevant for your business, and which ones your audience are most actively searching for online too.
If you want to move up the rankings on Google, it’s important to ensure that keywords are consistently used throughout your web pages – but it’s also important to avoid over stuffing them at the same time.
For example, if you are a wedding venue based in Bristol, you may want to ensure that the keyword “wedding venue Bristol” is mentioned consistently throughout your web copy to help your website to get ranked for that particular phrase (aiming for one keyword a paragraph usually works best in our experience, as overstuffing can lead to Google actually de-ranking your website – this is something you definitely want to avoid happening!)
If you use WordPress as the Content Management System (CMS) for your website, a great tool to use when you’re creating web pages or blog posts is the “Yoast” function, as it will give you an indication of how well keywords are being used and how effective the content is from an SEO point of view too.
Make sure your website is linked to your social media profiles
Ensure that links for all of your social media profiles (such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram) appear on your website.
This will again help to build your link trail presence, and if it’s possible to also add a link to your website on your social media profiles, then this will also boost your chances of getting found in Google search too.
Don’t forget about directories!
On the internet there are thousands of business directories which list the details of businesses in certain locations, usually broken down by specialism or category.
It’s free to submit listings on many of these websites like Bizify, Thomson Local and Business Links and they will provide a valuable back link that will not only drive traffic back to your website, but they will tell Google that your website is a credible source of information too.
If you are working out how to get found in Google, this should help to improve your ranking as a result.
